What is PUJ Obstruction?
PUJ (Pelvi-Ureteric Junction) obstruction is a condition that affects the area where the renal pelvis (the part of the kidney that collects urine) connects to the ureter (the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder). When there is an obstruction in this area, it can cause a buildup of urine in the kidney, which may lead to kidney damage if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preserving kidney function.
Risk Factors of PUJ Obstruction:
Congenital abnormalities
Kidney stones
Injury or trauma
Scar tissue (fibrosis)
Signs and Symptoms:
Pain in the lower back or side: Often felt in the area of the kidney, the pain may be intermittent and severe.
Urinary problems: Difficulty urinating or frequent urinary infections can occur due to a blockage.
Flank pain: This is pain in the area between the ribs and the hip, often associated with swelling or distension in the kidney.
Hydronephrosis: This is a condition where the kidney becomes swollen due to a buildup of urine. It may be identified during imaging tests.
Nausea and vomiting: A result of the kidney being unable to properly drain urine.
Fever: In cases of infection due to the obstruction, fever can be present.
Hematuria: Blood in the urine may occur due to injury or irritation in the urinary tract.
Diagnostic Approach:
Ultrasound
CT Scan
Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP)
Magnetic Resonance Urography (MRU)
Urodynamic studies
Renal Scintigraphy (DTPA scan)
