Radical Prostatectomy
Radical Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the entire cancer-affected prostate gland.
Need for the Radical Prostatectomy Surgery
If you have prostate cancer that is localized and has not spread, then Radical Prostatectomy would be right for you. To increase the chance of removing all the cancer cells, the surgeon will also take out the seminal vesicles (located on each side of the male urinary bladder). The surgeon may also remove the nearby lymph nodes, if there is a risk of cancer spreading there.
In Radical Laparoscopic Prostatectomy, the surgeon removes the prostate gland through smaller incisions. Around three to four small incisions are made to ensure a 3-dimensional view of the inside of the abdomen and completely remove the prostate gland.
In nerve-sparing surgery, the surgeon avoids damaging the two bundles of nerves that control the erections. If the cancer has spread close to the nerves, the surgeon may remove one or both bundles of nerves.
