Urethroplasty

Urethroplasty is a surgical procedure that repairs an injury or a defect in the walls of the urethra (a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the genitals).

Need for the Surgery

If you have a urethral stricture due to causes like:

  • Repeated episodes of urethritis,
  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia,
  • Scarring from a previous surgery
  • Trauma to the pelvic region or from pressure of a tumour,

then you may require an Urethroplasty. As there are several other techniques for the treatment of urethral stricture, you will be evaluated for suitability for an Urethroplasty procedure.

Details of the surgery
  • Urethroplasty is performed under general anesthesia or spinal anaesthesia.
  • Urethroplasty can be performed by two methods. One is primary repair, which involves complete excision of the narrowed part of the urethra. The proximal and distal patent parts are then rejoined. This method is used for small urethral strictures, less than 2 cm wide.
  • In the second method, tissue is grafted from bladder epithelium, or buccal mucosa and is used to enlarge the narrowed segment of the urethra.
